Water Testing Guide

Test smart, not often.

Regular freshwater aquarium testing helps catch water problems early and keeps fish healthy.

What Matters

Test for the parameters that affect fish.

Ammonia and nitrite should be 0 ppm. Nitrate should be kept low with regular maintenance. pH, KH, and GH should stay stable and suitable for the fish you keep.

New aquarium

Test ammonia and nitrite daily while the tank cycles. Once it is established, weekly checks help you spot changes before they become a larger problem.

Water changes

When nitrate rises above 20 ppm, it is usually time for a water change. Focus on steady water conditions rather than making rapid pH changes.

Liquid test kits give the most useful results. Bring your readings when you message Gigi for advice about a water or fish-health concern.
