Fish Acclimation Guide

Help new fish settle in safely.

Proper acclimation reduces stress when new freshwater fish arrive at their new aquarium.

15-Minute Float Method

Match the temperature, then net the fish in.

Turn off aquarium lights and float the unopened fish bag for about 15 minutes. Once temperature is equalized, gently net the fish into the aquarium and discard the bag water.

Keep it calm

Leave the aquarium lights off for a few hours, add fish slowly, and avoid chasing them around the bag with a net. Watch for signs of stress during the first day.

When to use more time

Shrimp, discus, wild-caught fish, marine fish, and sensitive species may need a longer acclimation process. Ask Gigi for species-specific guidance.

Do not pour store water into your aquarium. Wait 12-24 hours before feeding new fish so they have time to settle in.
