Provide Driftwood and Caves

Offer quality sinking foods and suitable vegetables. Remove uneaten fresh food before it fouls the water.

Visible algae is not a complete or dependable diet. Watch each pleco's belly and confirm it reaches food.
Protect Water Quality
Test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate; maintain oxygen; and perform consistent partial water changes. Warm water holds less oxygen.
Prepare for Breeding
Males may guard caves and become territorial. If a pair breeds, plan filtration, grow-out space, feeding, and homes for the juveniles.
Before adding a pleco: Confirm the species and adult size. A bristlenose pleco is not the same fish as a common pleco that can grow much larger.
