What to test
During a new tank cycle, test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate regularly. A cycled aquarium processes ammonia and nitrite back to 0 ppm within about 24 hours.
Beneficial bacteria make fish waste safer. Give a new tank time to cycle before adding a full stock of fish.
Fish waste and uneaten food create ammonia, which is harmful to fish. Beneficial bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite, then nitrate. Ammonia and nitrite should be 0 ppm before adding fish.

Most freshwater aquariums take about 4-6 weeks to fully cycle. Established filter media or bottled bacteria can sometimes help, but regular testing still matters.
